About the Czech Language
Czech is a Slavic language spoken by approximately 13 million people, primarily in the Czech Republic. It is closely related to Slovak and Polish, and also shares some similarities with other Slavic languages such as Russian and Ukrainian. The Czech language has a complex grammar with seven cases, three genders, and a rich system of declension and conjugation. Its phonology includes a variety of sounds, including unique consonants such as ř and č, and features stress on the first syllable of words.
One of the most iconic features of Czech is its use of diacritical marks. These marks change the pronunciation of letters and can significantly alter the meaning of words. For example, the word “sůl” (salt) with a hacek ( ˇ ) over the s sounds quite different from “sol” (sun) without it. Another interesting feature of Czech is its use of diminutives, which are formed by adding various suffixes to words. These diminutives are used not only to indicate small size, but also to convey affection or familiarity.
